Customer Rating: Summary: You get what you pay for Comment: Ok,
I have a generic laptop that boots Vista, Fedora Core, and nUbuntu running a generic internal Broadcom chipset for WiFi. Either my internal card is really good or this external USB WiFi Adapter is not all that great. I am leaning toward the latter.
In both the Windows and Linux variants the USB adapter typically only picked up half of the APs that my internal card did. I tried with and without an USB extension cord and with and without the internal card disabled. The results were always the same - this adapter performed mediocre at best.
The cheap plastic case feels like a badly made toy that could break under marginal duress. The bit where the antenna screws on feels particularly weak and everytime I adjusted the antenna orientation I worried I was going to snap something. The antenna itself seems of decent quality - it clearly was not manufactured in the same facility as the adapter itself.
So...you get what you pay for (I paid $15). It works as advertised, but I would recommend passing on this particular adapter. The only interesting thing about this was my cat's compulsion to chew on the antenna...
Customer Rating: Summary: USB lan adapter with external antenna Comment: i have one USB broadband (EVDO) modem, several notebooks and travel alot. i was thinking of purchasing EVDO modem /wireless access point hardware but decided to try this (for much less money). using this i was able to setup one notebook as a wireless access point and now share the broadband modem (using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)) with all notebooks. the external antenna gives me excellent range!
Customer Rating: Summary: Decent adapter Comment: When connecting to an access point that was giving a one bar signal with other adapters gave no signals with this adapter connected directly to the laptop's USB port. When I attached it using a six foot USB extender cable it got 1-2 bars.
Other adapters could not receive in my basement. This one would receive if I was using the USB extender cable and I was holding it. As soon as I would set it down and walk away it would lose the connection.
