She's 29 years old, single, and overweight. She doesn't have a college degree, a boyfriend, or a job. She's outspoken, obstinate, and fed up with society's expectations of her. Her name is Kim Sam-Soon, and she's Korea's unlikely sweetheart!
Thanks to its everywoman protagonist, My Lovely Sam-Soon has been billed as Korea's answer to Bridget Jones. Kim Sam-Soon (Kim Seon-Ah, who gained 15 pounds for the role) is a Cordon Bleu-trained pastry chef who doesn't conform to the stereotype of the typical K-Drama Cinderella. Sam-Soon won't let men push her around, will eat and sleep her way out of a depression, and could care less how other people see her. But the unthinkable occurs: Kim Sam-Soon meets a Prince Charming named Hyeon Jin-Heon (Hyeon Bin). He's a rich restaurant owner who hires Sam-Soon, not only to be a chef, but also to be his pretend girlfriend! So begins a series of surprising and touching events that would try the emotions of any normal woman. But this is no normal woman - this is Kim Sam-Soon!
When My Lovely Sam-Soon first aired, audiences immediately identified with Kim Sam-Soon's stereotype-breaking character. With her "unladylike" behavior, Sam-Soon challenges traditional ideas of what Korean women are like by providing a glimpse of what a Korean woman is really like! Audiences responded by making My Lovely Sam-Soon the most watched K-Drama of the year, with a viewership rate of over 40 percent. Alternately hilarious, heartwarming, and heartbreaking, My Lovely Sam-Soon - and Kim Sam-Soon herself - will win you over!

Customer Rating: Summary: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder Comment: My Lovely Sam-Soon is a very well-written and well-made kdrama series. It has genuine comedic moments, heartfelt drama and a love triangle in which you actually feel sorry for the "spoiler", who comes all the way from America.
The story is quite simple - a rich mother of a boy(Jin-Heon) wants him to get married and also take over her hotel. He prefers to run his own restaurant. We also have a poor mother of a somewhat chubby, plain and tough girl(Sam-Soon) who wants to marry her off before she becomes an old maid. This girl happens to be a master pastry chef and she ends up working at the restaurant owned by this particular boy. There is no attraction between the two, but he needs a favor from her and she needs money for her mom. So, they form an unlikely contractual partnership.
This series is tied together nicely from beginning to end. Not easy to do when you have 16 episodes. Much of the story takes place in Jin-Heon's restaurant and I enjoyed this much more than it taking place in someones home for example.
As enjoyable as this series was, I did have to endure a few clumsy scenes and some unlikely situations. One being the situation involving Sam-soons ex-boyfriend. I also have to say that the main love story was a little hard to fathom(maybe it's a guy thing), but I went with it anyway.
The series also contains a large amount of forward looking scenarios, meaning scenes which are born out of someones imagination but did not really happen. There were times when I got confused and did not know what was someone's imagination and what was real.
To be honest, I laughed alot more than I cried while watching this. Yes, it's a love story and a very effective one, but the comedic moments and style of this show give the viewer more of an uplifting feeling. It reminds us of a well known lesson that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Customer Rating: Summary: Love this! Comment: This is one of the better dramedies korean soaps out there. Highly enjoyable. What I really liked about this is the fact that in the end... something you don't see a lot in korean soaps is a single couple together in bed and enjoying each other's company. No sex scenes, but it's realistic. Its not the usual respect the family over the hero/heroine feelings, but about a real girl, getting older, struggling to make ends meet, finding unexpectedly a Mr.Just RightNow and making it work. Where it will end, who knows?
Customer Rating: Summary: Wonderful Korean Mini-Series Comment: This is a really funny, yet touching Korean mini-series. A number of reviewers have rightly given it 5 stars. The female lead is terrific and the story plot beautifully put together. Everyone appears to be really loopy except for the two English speaking second leads. The latter are very good and bring an interesting twist to the story. Of the half dozen k-dramas that I've viewed, this is easily the best one. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it to the point of going to bed 1 - 2 in the morning to watch as many episodes as possible in one day. It is quite addictive.
Customer Rating: Summary: As Good As It Gets Comment: So many people have said so many good things about this series that I don't feel I have to add a lengthy review. I would just say that my wife, for whom sleep is more important than most other things (especially since we get up at 6 AM every week day) made me stay up until 1 AM to finish the programs. My advice is not to start watching them at night unless you want to miss an entire night's sleep.
Customer Rating: Summary: Kim Sam-Soon! Comment: The quality of the DVDs and the extra Kim Sam-Soon mouse pad (it's adorable!) included in this DVD box set are the real plus points. The price may seem a little expensive, but it's very hard to find such good quality of this great series on the internet. You'll definitely get a lot of use out of it. You can lend it to friends, and I'm sure if it's in your house, you'll be tempted to watch it numerous times. Also, I believe there are english and spanish subtitles (there are more languages but I can't remember), and the subtitles are very good and don't take anything away from the series. I really enjoy this series. I think it's one of the best if not the best Korean mini-series available out there for english speakers. It's universal themes of love, heartbreak, comedy, and not fitting into the image of an ideal woman make the series very entertaining.
