From the supplier: There are concerns that the massive outflow of foreign direct investment (FDI) from Japan since the early 1980s is eroding the country's manufacturing base. There are fears that the move of productive capacity abroad is hurting domestic growth and employment. Japanese FDI since the 1980s has been remarkable in that outflows have exceeded inflows by more than a factor of 10, have changed considerably in terms of sectoral and regional composition, and have shown a cyclical pattern reflective of the yen's movements and of factors affecting activity in Japan and its major trading partners. It is proposed that Japanese FDI outflows are part of a necessary restructuring of the economy in response to globalization and economic growth in the rest of Asia. It is further contended that the restructuring will strengthen the Japanese economy and better prepare for global competition.
