The music of this album celebrates the most native of our musical experiences with lullabies from many lands and languages - from Appalachia, from the north of England, from Wales, Norway, Sicily, the Basque lands, and Korea - with the beauty of the treble voice drawing these distant lands and cultures together. In Western heritage, the greatest outpouring of lullaby music comes from images of Mary and the baby Jesus. Yet this is not essentially a Christmas album, nor a sacred album, though such themes keep reappearing, but rather an experience of rocking, soothing music. Sung only by boys' voices and accompanied by a few instruments, (piano, recorder, cello and violin)each sung lullaby - or group of lullabies - is complemented by an unsung 'cradle song,' short little piano interludes, taking the listener from one lullaby to the next as in a dream.
The CD should not be limited in its appeal to only mothers and their babies and younger children, but to all those in search of restorative music "for the quiet times."
