Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: This is a "clean" CD. Unlike what is said by another reviewer Comment: I am an American lived in Asia for over 20 years. I am fluent in Mandarin. I disagree with R.Meyer from the USA who gave this CD a 2-star rating for obscenity. R.Meyer admitted to not understanding "mandarine", and wrote a review anyway. I read the lyrics of each song several times, and cannot find anything bad. I think she made a mistake. I believe she was referring to another CD, probably a hip-hop CD. Not this CD. Another reviewer posted the songs for all to read. The word "brother" refers to a "male", "sister" a "female", not sibblings. For R.Meyers to say the lyrics of these songs are offensive, is like insisting "Silent Night"(the Christams song) sings about young children joining Al Qaeda, becoming teenage suicide bombers. That is how absurd she is. Her comments have prevented countless people from enjoying these truly beautiful songs that have passed down and refined over centuries. The wording chosen by the peasants are simple, yet profound. The last song is worth mentioning -- "The school boy says he is not afraid to walk to school under the burning sun or pelted by the heavy rain. He only fear being called lazy by his teacher. Without an education, he cannot face his parents. Without an education, he will go through life as a beast of burden." How obscene is that? Please enjoy this CD. I was taken a back by the note that said there where explicate lyrics. So, I pulled out the lyrics and read them. Nothing horrible, in my eyes, after all these are old folk stories from various areas in the Peoples' Republic of China. Also while reading the Ch'I-Lin Purse by Linda Fang I happened to read in the glossary that the word Ta-ko literally is "Big Brother"; often used to address a man whom one did not know personally. This revelation shows me that these old folk songs are not talking about actual brother and sister's in love, but a woman or girl who does not know a young man. So, the only thing that might be a little explict is the one song called " A Far Away Place". Here are the lyrics to all of the songs. I think it would be a shame not to purchase this cd based on not knowing Ta-ko means a man one does not know and 1 line in the song A Far Away Place. Customer Rating: Summary: Angelic little voices! Comment: We are ethnically chinese, but my husband and I cannot speak chinese. I purchased this for my 2 little boys in the hope of familiarizing them with the sounds of mandarin and exposing them to some chinese culture. I was overwhelmed by the production as I was not expecting such quality. The voices are clear and beautiful, nice music and the songs are wonderful. I find myself listening to them by choice even when the kids aren't around. I did some research on the Bear Children's Choir and they are famous in Hong Kong. There is a company based in Canada that imports all their products in the U.S. and Canada. I am definitely interested in their other products. google it. More Reviews
