The motto of the U.S. Life-Saving Service, which was the predecessor of the U.S. Coast Guard, was "You have to go out, but you don't have to come back." Required by regulations to attempt a rescue, regardless of their chances of returning, the brave crews of the USLSS performed thousands of heroic rescues, using pulling boats, breeches buoys, and guts.
