Editorial Reviews:

At Vij's, one of North America’s most innovative Indian restaurants, owner Vikram Vij and his wife Meeru use the freshest local ingredients and original ideas to create exciting new takes on the cuisines of India. Though far from traditional, the dishes remain true to one glorious hallmark of Indian cooking: fabulous spicing. Among the luscious offerings included here are yogurt and tamarind marinated grilled chicken, seared venison medallions with fig and roasted pomegranate khoa, and marinated lamb popsicles in fenugreek curry. Vegetarian selections abound, with dishes like portobello mushrooms in porcini cream curry, coconut curried vegetables, and jackfruit with cayenne and black cardamom. Recipes for naan, chapattis, raiti, and other sides, staples, vegetables, and desserts allow readers to prepare an Indian feast from beginning to end. As beautiful and sumptuous as the recipes it contains, Vij's is a delicious manifesto for a new style of Indian cooking.

Summary: Enough to make me want to go to Vancouver and try the place
Comment: This book was a gift from my in-laws (who live in Vancouver) to my wife with an invitation to come visit and go to the restaurant together. Since we have not been to Vij's, I cannot say how the recipes compare to the "real thing". But we have really liked everything we tried. Since we are vegetarians, much of the book is a quick flip through*. The roasted cashews have become a staple and many of the other Indian stable recipes are good (even the Chai recipe is worth a careful read). Sauteed Brussels sprouts are tasty (but have the same effects as other form of Brussels sprouts). We loved the sauteed spinach, arugula with paneer & cashews. Many of the recipes are classic Indian ("North Indian"), some seem to be more Indian-Canadian fusion (i.e., Indian inspired). But not being Indian, I can only speculate -- until, that is, we go to the restaurant to ask the owners. And having tried the cookbook, that is definitely going to happen.

* Unlike some reviewers, I do not penalize a cookbook for having recipes for things I would never eat.

Summary: A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT
Comment: I have never been to the restaurant so I was thrill to see this cookbook. I cooked many dishes from the cookbook for my 50th birthday party. I gave it one star because the book is beautiful, recipes (ingredient combination) enticing, and instruction clear. However, the recipes I tried didn't work. The worst one was the black chickpea curry. It was way too watery (9 cups of water for 1 cup of chickpeas!!). I wonder if he tested the recipes or not. If you are an experienced cook, the book might work for you because you need to make adjustment along the way. I collect cookbooks and this book is now in the basement, not in my kitchen.

Summary: Vij Family's Chicken Curry is AWESOME!
Comment: I made the Chicken Curry on page 92 and it was a unique experience. Just once in a while, you make something with such magnificent depth and flavor you wonder how it wound up in your kitchen. Judging from this dish and the mango pineapple lassi (nice, but not spectacular -- am I being too fussy?), this book is more or less my constant companion these days. I DID make my own garam masala (page 26). I hope they write another someday.

Summary: Vij's Elegant and Inspired Indian Cuisine
Comment: This book takes Indian cuisine to a new level. It is not your typical Indian fare. The flavors of east meet west in Vij's book. This is not for beginners. Skilled cooks with discerning palates will enjoy this book.

Summary: Wow .
Comment:
After eating at VJ's in Vancouver BC ,I had to buy his cookbook,I've made his simple chicken curry many many times and I think it's one of the best.
Also his Mango Pineapple lassi tasted just like the one I had in his restaurant and I was so excited to be able to create the exact same drink .
You feel like you know the family after reading their wonderful stories.
Thank you for this wonderful book.
