This beautifully illustrated book is full of hands-on projects to help teach children about the arts and traditions of East Asian people. Line drawings give clear instructions for crafts such as Japanese Kabuki masks, Chinese calligraphy scrolls, Indonesian batik, and Mongolian jewelry.
Spotlight customer reviews:
Customer Rating: Summary: Very Disappointing Comment: As a teacher, I purchased this book, hoping that it would provide my students with art activities to enrich their multidisciplinary study of Asian lands and cultures.
Instead, to our disappointment, we found that Hands-On Asia focuses solely on the arts of the Far East, completely omitting any reference to anything west of China. It ignores Russia (though it is situated mostly in Asia), the countries of the Middle East, the Arabian peninsula, the Indian sub-continent and Central Asia.
Even the book's map of Asia is wrong! It goes no farther west than the Himalayas. As one of my students commented, "Doesn't the author know that 'Asia' means all of Asia?"
It seems to me that by doing a little more research and perhaps limiting the activities to only one or two per country, the author could have given a much more accurate representation of the arts and crafts of the entire Asian continent.
I will allow the book one small star. The illustrations are excellent, and the instructions easy enough for even primary students to follow without too much difficulty.
With proper research this could have been an excellent resource. Customer Rating: Summary: Great book Comment: Ethnologically accurate craft projects of various levels with clear instructions and great color photos. Great for schools, Girl Scout troops, or anybody else.
