Born into a peasant family in South Vietnam, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Dinh initially joined the Vietminh resistance against French occupation. In 1960 she led the uprising in Ben Tre province against the Diem regime, was then appointed to the leadership committee of the NLF (National Liberation Front) in her province, and later served as Chairman of the South Vietnam Women's Liberation Association.
