Editorial Reviews:

The Challenge of Eastern Asian Education highlights how Asian education policy and practice challenge American schools. The book focuses on innovations that the nations of the Pacific Rim have developed for their schools, and it analyzes how these educational systems have tried to meet the challenges of rapid social and economic change. It is unique in that it provides in-depth coverage of the Asian approach to education and explicitly discusses the implications of Asian education for America.

There is special interest in Asian countries, not only because of their unparalleled economic success, but because Asian societies have been held up as models for social harmony and discipline. This book provides specific examples of Asian educational practice that may have relevance to the United States. It is unique in that it deals not only with Japan, which has received considerable attention, but with other Pacific Rim nations as well.

Summary: Accessible but scattered
Comment: This is obviously a collection of essays, rather than a book with a coherent theme, and as such, there are few clear implications for America (or other countries), despite what the title may suggest. Furthermore, although the title is specifically designed to be geographically inclusive, the majority of the information is based on education in Japan. Most of the research is qualitative rather than quantitative, and the conclusions are almost all very tentative. This results in a writing style that varies predictably from author to author, but in general is quite accessible to the lay person.

Based on my own experience as a Japanese high school teacher, I think that at times the researchers have had the wool pulled over their eyes by the Japanese Ministry of Education's propaganda and statistics management. At times the schools being described bore almost no resemblence to my own experiences here. However, there were also a good number of points raise that helped me see my own situation in a different light and reappraise my analysis of what I see every day.
