Editorial Reviews:

A concise summary of Japanese grammar is presented for beginning students of the language. Topics include parts of speech, sentence structure, idioms, and pronunciation advice. All Japanese words are presented phonetically. Important points of grammar or vocabulary, as well as subject heads, are printed in a second color as a quick-reference aid for students. New to this edition is a Japanese-English vocabulary list.

Summary: Great Concise Grammar Book
Comment: Japanese Grammar (Barron's Grammar Series) This is a great little book, very concise and small in size - it can fit in your pocket. Very well laid out with color headings. Great for the beginner, gives concise coverage of pronunciation, writing systems, word order, nouns, pronouns, particles, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and special topics. The best book I have seen for the beginner. I bought several other books, but this is the only one I use, in addition to a good dictionary -recommend Langensheidt Pocket Dictionary Japanese. Also, you need another book that gives sample use of words and sentence structure.

Summary: no script at all !
Comment: This small and inexpensive little book is one of the best purchases I have made.

Why beginner's should use this:

1. no script to confuse you: everything is in English and romanization

2. excellent examples for each concept

3. clear explanations of the jargon used: it includes linguistic-jargon but the jargon is actually explained ! For example, it explains what 'accusative' means before they use it in examples

4. when they translate the romanized parts into english they include the "word-order" translations: for example the sentence 'Ban gohan o tabemashoo ka ?' is translated "properly" like 'Shall we eat dinner?' and also in "word-order" form like 'dinner shall we eat?"

This is what a grammar book should be like.

Summary: Great book for learning the basics of speaking Japanese
Comment: I was glad to find this guide at the bookstore. It's small, cheap, formatted in an easy-to-read way, and written in a way that presents the information in a simple and concise manner. It's probably best to have a rather thorough understanding of English if you want to use this book, since it doesn't spend much time explaining the nuances of English grammar which it uses to relate to Japanese grammar (particles, gerunds, etc.). The two-color print makes it easy to find what you're looking for.
This book is good for teaching, but it's probably best used as a handbook. It has kana charts in the beginning, but that's the only time it uses actual Japanese script; the rest is in simple romaji and so the book it best used for speaking and general learning of grammar, not so much words and writing. One of the elements this book is missing is information on emphasis in speaking; it gives you words, but doesn't show where the stresses go or where sounds are dropped off. You either guess based on a short passage about dropping sounds, or you learn from experience, listening to people or reading a dictionary. Of course, it is a book about /grammar/, and for that purpose it is extremely useful. Pair this with a dictionary or two, maybe a workbook or so, and you'll have a good self-lead course in Japanese.

Summary: Excellent Reference
Comment: This book is compact, but since it is in two colors it is easy to read. It is focused on complete beginners of Japanese since everything is written in Romaji. There are no Kana script besides a reference chart for Hiragana and Katakana.

Summary: Good Beginner's Reference
Comment: The book is intended to be a beginner's pocket reference and it meets that goal well. It covers the most important topics clearly and concisely. I've had it for a few months now and I've found it to be quite useful although I wish there were more examples. I'm definitely glad I purchased this book and you can't beat the price. The authors really did a great job of getting an incredible amount of information into minimal space.
