Customer Rating: Summary: Accounts were a long time coming Comment: There has been a dire need for a good and accurate accounts of the real heroes of the Asia-Pacific region; and Chee's new book provides just that. Unfortunately regional literature is coloured by cronyism and brown-nosing. Examples of such work are Alex Josey's notoriously bad piece on Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew and even Lee Kuan Yew's recent autobiography. Both pieces have been accorded too much 'good' publicity, mainly from their own state controlled media or people not knowing any better. Chee should be commended for his effort. More writers should follow suit. Customer Rating: Summary: Asia's quest for democracy Comment: Alan Abrahams reviews this book in the May 6, 1999 issue of Far Eastern Economic Review, p. 41. He says the book "vividly recounts the struggles of six prominent Asian human-rights activists and their protracted efforts toward building democratic societies in their own countries."
