Summary: Needs better proofreader
Comment: This book has some great history and wonderful array of recipes from all over the india and 3 stars because of that. I learned lot about different cuisines of india.. I must say this book requies detailed proof reading and editing. I tried two curries - Chicken Stylet and Cauliflower Kasi Curry from Maglore region and both are wrong either with the recipe steps or pictures. Ingredients and steps doesn't match. Its sad that potentially masterpiece work is getting wasted because of incorrect editing of recipes. Camelia, if you are reading this, check these two recipes and do corrections..

Summary: Great introduction to Indian food
Comment: I received this book as a gift and at first sight put it alongside the growing pile of "ho hum" cooking books. As a regular visitor to India, I have collected more than my share of cooking books, none of them capture the essence of Indian food as well as this, while keeping it simple. The Introduction explaining the underlying philosophical assumptions behind a menu is interesting and enlightening. Above all the recipes work, which sadly is not often the case.

You'll think twice or thrice before ordering take out; go on make your own Indian feast!

Summary: Good Idea, Good Pictures, Bad on cooking steps
Comment: Having bought this book and making some of the curries. I found that the steps and the ingredients just do not jive at times. She should've spent more time make sure the steps were correct. The curries just didn't taste right.

Summary: New edition with corrections please for what could be a great book
Comment: The book is great for people who are already familiar with Indian cooking.What it does not specify is that Indian spices vary widely in potency and quality.Personally,I have needed to change proportions and cooking timings in every dish.Also far too many typos for an expensive book.
Mainly though, the ingredients are right, the sequencing works and it does enable one to make delicious curries. I do own over a hundred cookbooks including several Madhur Jaffery books and find hers go heavy on the oils and are far too much for the western palate. This book is easily the best of the lot. I wish the author would take the time and effort to do a truly authentic Indian cookbook...she certainly has the resources.

Summary: Absolutely beautiful
Comment: This book is worth buying just to look at! Reading the first 50 or so pages, you are provided with background information on the author's culinary experience, cultural influences, and most of all an in-depth look at the spices involved in cooking all Indian meals. Once one reaches the curry recipe portion of the book, one is treated to full page after full page of gorgeously arranged dishes of what looks to be delicious food. The only dilemma I foresee is having the book close enough to the cooking action - yet not so close as to risk splashing something on the pristine pages.
