Editorial Reviews:

With its exotic aromas and complex flavors, Indian cuisine is one of the world's best. It's no wonder that so many people adore it--and also no surprise that it could seem daunting to cook Indian food at home. Now, acclaimed chef and cooking teacher Suvir Saran cuts out the fuss, sharing casual, home-style Indian dishes that are perfect for everyday cooking.

Indian Home Cooking is a celebration of the food Indians cook in American kitchens today, using ingredients found in most supermarkets. With streamlined techniques and intense, authentic flavors, Indian Home Cooking heralds a new generation of Indian cookbooks. From slow-simmered curries with layered flavors to quickly sautéed dishes, these approachable recipes explore the wide world of Indian cuisine, including:

*Irresistible snacks and appetizers, such as Puff Pastry Samosas with Green Peas, and Spinach-Potato Patties
*Seductively spiced lentil dals, from the North Indian classic flavored with whole cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves to a Southern Indian version with dried red chilies, mustard seeds, and curry leaves
*Aromatic meat and seafood curries, like Coconut Chicken with Cashews and spicy Goan Shrimp Balchao
*An incredible range of vegetable dishes, including Stir-Fried Green Beans with Cumin, and Cauliflower with Sautéed Green Peppers, Tomato, and Yogurt
*Easy, colorful chutneys and pickles to fill your pantry

Filled with gorgeous photographs, fresh flavors, and practical advice, Indian Home Cooking is an illuminating guide to real Indian food.

Summary: Very easy to follow cookbook
Comment: I just received this book from Amazon and am very pleased at its simplicity. I really enjoy Indian cooking and have always wanted to try recipes but my previous cookbook was just too hard to follow and the ingredients were not readily available.

My first recipe was Indian spicy fried salmon and it turned out great. It was not too spicy and I served it on top of brown rice. My only mistake was not following the recipe fully and removing the small amount of skin on the fish, but it was still very good. I used Panko breadcrumbs in place of regular breadcrumbs and they worked very well with the recipe.

I am, by no stretch of the imagination, a great cook, but with this book, you can surprise your family and guests with something imaginative and different. I am anxious to try other recipes.

Summary: Review from a seasoned cook of Indian origin...
Comment: Ok, so I bought this book as one of the first additions to my limited cookbook collection. Obviously I was looking for different ideas and techniques than what I'm accustoemd to. For non-Indians this could be a good introduction to Indian cooking. However it would be quite a disappointment for Indians. It is full of useless pictures of spices and unconvincing anecdotes and the recipes are close variations of eachother. The rice cooking technique makes the rice sticky unless you add butter(not mentioned), which I'm sure most pro chefs do, but is not a good idea for everyday home cooking. If you've been cooking for a while then you can tell right away by looking at the recipes that they are only meant to sound exotic but are neither authentic nor will they be edible unless you make serious modifications of your own...basically not worth it.

Summary: Don't let the title fool you...
Comment: When I purchased this book I was hoping for 'authentic' Indian recipes and was disappointed to find they were not. Many recipes make substitutions instead of using the original ingredients; or the recipes are 'modified' from the original.

The author also includes a number of NON-Indian recipes in this book [especially in the dessert section]. What on earth are they doing in here?? How does this relate to 'Indian Home Cooking'??

You also get a lot less recipes than you bargain for since many recipes are just slight variations of each other. I would have preferred more and different dishes.

Of the dishes I have tried, none of them have been very outstanding and are not worth repeating.
